Hello Again Old Friends

 Life has its way of getting in the way and before you know almost a year has passed by since I lsat logged in. I haven't been meaning to be away this long, but it just kind of happened. I had weight loss surgery and have lost 100 pounds. I have been staying more active and I am back in school getting a paralegal diploma to add on to my BA in History. 

We are also working hard on our book and documentary and hope to have these done by the end of this year. *fingers crossed on that one*

I found even more information that we will be including in the documentary and the book. 

Sorry I was away for so long but I will do my best to not be away that long again.

A very brief history of Portsmouth Island, NC

 Portsmouth Island, NC is located 6 miles SW of Ocracoke village and is separated from Ocracoke Island by Ocracoke Inlet. At one time this island was a thriving sea port and shipping center.  In the year 1753, the General Assembly of North Carolina, passed legislation on March 27 to lay out a town on Core banks in Carteret County. The town was to be named Portsmouth and it would be fifty acres and divided into half acre lots. How I Got Hooked On Genealogy

I have a class at Edgecombe Community College to blame for my getting totally hooked on doing genealogy. It was 2004 and I signed up for a local history/genealogy class with Monika Fleming, author of Edgecombe County: Along the Tar River . Part of the class was spent talking about Edgecombe County historyand the other part of the class was doing a genealogy project. I signed up for the class because I love history and it seemed interesting. I had heard that the professor, Monika Fleming, was a good professor to take history classes with, especially this class because she knew a lot about Edgecombe county and the town of Tarboro. When people think of genealogy sometimes they think about searching for old census records or newspaper articles. They think to look through cemeteries to find their ancestors, which are good ways to find information. However, genealogy starts with the living. Hello again readers. Today's posting is about ancestry.com. I have found ancestry to be valuable in getting a hold of death certificates and making connections with others who are researching the same family names. Using ancestry has helped me gather some information that I didn't have. However, you must still be careful with the information that is shared by others as it may not be completely accurate. For instance I had someone on ancestry try and tell me that a great great aunts maiden name was Gwaltney when it was indeed Parrish. She happened to marry another Parrish(not related) but when they were doing the research they were afraid someone might think they were related and so they had made up a last name for her. Yes I have found back in the 1800's that sometimes indeed cousins married each other. Whether they knew they were cousins or not, I do not know.
